| Town Planning and Development Control
The section is responsible for the administration of town planning schemes and building bylaws (seven subsections).
Within the department the Statutory Planning section deals with development project and rezoning applications whilst the Development and Housing Section is responsible for projects in the informal sector.

| The Environment Branch
This department is responsible for ensuring that development is environmentally sound.

| Land Information Systems
The department is responsible for the compilation of a Geographical Information System (GIS) that is available to those who are interested in data of a geographical nature.

| The Physical Environment Service Unit
The Service Unit is responsible for most of the engineering and environmental activities in the Durban area including roads, parks, traffic and transportation, urban development and town planning. It also liaises with the informal housing sector to encourage self help schemes and encourages tenders from disadvantaged groups.
The Service Unit is split up into a number of Departments including:-

| The Urban Planning and Design Branch
The branch facilitates and co-rdinates urban planning, environmental and development opportunities in Durban. AMongst current projects are the Point Waterfront, Beachfront, Warwick Avenue and the Victoria Embankment.

| The 'Keep Durban Beautiful' Project
This wide ranging scheme operates programmes that seek to involve all sectors of the community in the control of waste. The staff are return overlibwn from the Durban Solid Waste branch together with assistance from the Council and private sector and volunteers return overlibwn from all sectors of the community.
Amongst the projects are Adopt a Spot, Adopt a return overlibin, the Schools Beautification competition, a preschool programme, waste management for crowd events, waste management and the informal trader and how to organize a community cleanup. As aids to these programmes there are numerous leaflets.
