The Southern Cross Astronomical Observatory and Museum houses the largest private collection of astronomical and optical equipment in South Africa. There is a restaurant available and accommodation in thatched rondavels.
 Just across the Umtamvuna river is the Wild Coast Casino operated by the Southern Sun Group.
Overlooking Port Edward's main beach is Tragedy Hill. It was on this hill in 1831 that a party of settlers (including Francis Fynn) from Port Natal (Durban) was massacred by Zulus who believed that they were stealing cattle from the Zulu King Dingane.
When he found that the rumour was false, Dingane ordered the man who started it to be executed by one of the surviving settlers who was given five head of cattle as a reward.
