Philip Martin Evers   MSc, FRMS, FIST.

CURRENT RESPONSIBILITIES

I am sole proprietor of my own website design consultancy (www.warthog.co.za). This involves liaising with customers and prospective clients to determine their requirements, preparing draft web sites for perusal and preparing final versions for use on the Internet. The procedure requires use of HTML, DHTML, Java, ColdFusion and Javascript, a knowledge of DTP and page design, an understanding of the use of colour, experience with the use of graphics for the Internet and the ability to manipulate same.

I am also called upon to perform further duties. These include the functions of researcher for site content, site content itself, editing and layout. A further component of my business that I am frequently called upon to perform is that of digital graphic artist. My clients in this regard are the Province of KwaZulu-Natal and the University of Natal and the work involves the creation of maps, retouching of images, the creation of logos for conferences and compiling PowerPoint presentations.

OBJECTIVES

I had achieved all my objectives in my previous career and decided to accept another challenge. As I had had long experience with graphics – particularly technical graphics – and had constructed several websites, both for the university and for friends, it seemed logical that website design was the direction in which to go.

SUMMARY

Six years experience in website creation and design.

I am not comfortable with WYSIWYG HTML editors and have always hand coded pages. This offers greater flexibility, an intimate knowledge of the page in the event of problems and much faster pages. The editor of choice is HomeSite.

Graphics software includes: PaintShop Pro 7, PhotoShop 5.5, CorelDraw and PhotoPaint 8, Freehand, Fireworks 3, Flash 4 and a variety of smaller programmes. I also use ColdFusion 4.5 if I think it necessary for a site. However, its expense has precluded many ISPs from installing it and I am now investigating mySQL as an alternative.

All my sites use Javascript of some sort and occasionally make use of Java.

DESIGN PHILOSOPHY:

Whilst I appreciate clever artwork, I do not lose sight of the fact that the purpose of any website is to make relevant information available to the visitor. As quickly as possible. Therefore I strive for simplicity in a website.

WEBSITES:

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Economic Development and Tourism forms a significant part of the workload. The site and all its content were supplied by my business with no input from the department. It is currently under final revision and will be neater and faster than the current pages. There has been input from the department for the new site and is somewhat broader than tourism. The current size is 700 pages and 5000 hits per day.

The Asian Harm Reduction Network required a simple site. Unfortunately, many of their pages are long.

My business created a site for the Tibet Society of South Africa free of charge and is maintained by ourselves. Again, some pages are overly long and there is currently only sporadic interest in maintaining its currency.

Megatone are an inkjet cartridge refilling service. Again, as the site consisted principally of tabulated data, the emphasis was on speed.

A typical small site is that of St. Lucia Wetlands Guest House.

A current (April 2001) venture is Chiangmai Mall, designed to offer a resource for Northern Thailand, approximately 400 pages.
