Website Design Pricing: How Long is a Piece of String?

The first question we are usually asked is "How much is a website?"

Many people think that the cost is related directly to the number of pages - four pages = R2,000 therefore forty pages = R20,000.

How Website Design affects Pricing

This is only partially true because there are several factors in any website that affect the price in a non-arithmetic way regardless of number of pages:

The cost of a website depends on size, graphic complexity and functionality.
  1. 'Setup' involves creating a 'look & feel' that the client is happy with, that enhances the website usability and which reflects the client's business.
  2. Functionality - contact forms, slide shows, database support, content management system, product shots, ecommerce etc. will affect the price of a website.
  3. The length and complexity of layout of the individual pages together with editing.
  4. Finally, the number of pages will obviously affect the price although adding extra pages is relatively inexpensive.

Beware!

Experience has shown that 'nickel and diming' a website is false economy. Such websites do nothing except to soak up hosting fees and direct business to your competition.

A little spent on employing an involved website designer and a regimen of regular maintenance will pay very large dividends.

The Number of Visitors you can Expect (the website 'traffic')

This varies on the size of the business. A small operation should attract 300 visitors a month whilst a larger operation will be visited by 1,500 or more.It doesn't take a mathematical genius to work out that only a small proportion of that traffic is needed to generate significant revenue. In the case of the tourist trade, each visitor will be acting on behalf of two or three others. Twenty visitors a day doesn't sound very much but the possible business is around 15,000 visitors annually!
