With the opening of a new freeway, Ballito is becoming increasingly attractive as a place to live for those who work in Durban, 50 kms away.
There are tidal pools, restaurants and a good, shark protected beach. The town is for an unknown reason named after a brand of Italian silk stockings.
North from Ballito is Thompson's Bay with a tidal pool and an olympic size tidal pool. A marine trail takes visitors to High Rock from which heights Shaka's warriors were forced to leap to test their courage. Close by is a geological formation called Hole in the Wall.
North again is Shaka's Rock with a picturesque tidal pool. Adjacent to SHaka's Rock is Salt Rock where Shaka's servants used to collect salt at low tide to trade. Again there is a lovely tidal pool and a caravan site right on the shore.
Umhlali, north of Shaka's Rock is named the 'place of waiting' where early settlers would have to wait before crossing the Umhlali River. Inland from Umhlali is Shakaskraal, once site of Shaka's military kraal kwaHlomendlini.
North is Tinley Manor, location of a beautiful lagoon whilst inland is Stanger, now called kwaDukuza where Zulu King Shaka was assasinated. A monument stands over the grain pit where his body was thrown.
Zinkwazi takes its name from the fish eagles that perch on the banks of its lovely lagoon.Back to Menu
