The St. Lucia Game Park and Crocodile Centre is approximately 3km north of the main campsites. The predecessor of the Crocodile Centre, the Crocodile Research Unit, was established to learn more about the reptiles and to reverse the drastic decline in numbers that had occurred throughout the continent of Africa. Even as late as 1969, the Nile crocodile was classed as vermin.
As a result of efforts in the Unit, it was possible to breed and reintroduce the animals to their natural habitat and ensure that their necessary place in the ecosystem was not lost forever.
It was a natural consequence that the Unit be developed into a commercial Crocodile Centre. The Centre contains over two hundred of the reptiles along with several other similar species.
Further, the Centre holds displays of the various ecosystems found in the area, living examples of the Lake and marine systems, equipment used by poachers and maps of the trails in the Park.
Animals that may well be encountered on the trails are zebra, wildebeest, impala and reedbuck.
