The Durban police force was instituted in 1854 and comprised a Chief Constable and six Constables. In 1885 it was redesignated the Durban Borough Police until the promulgation of city status to the borough in 1932 when the force was renamed the Durban City Police Force.
The primary functions of the force were laid out in 1992, namely crime prevention, traffic control and the enforcement of the City's Bylaws.
Members of the force have all the powers normally conferred upon a peace officer but restricted to the Durban Metropolitan Area.
In response to an increase in crime in the city and in particular its effect on tourism, a plan to institute a 'Bobby on the beat' on the beachfront and in the CBD was instituted.
This, and a general increase in the complement of the City Police has resulted in a increase in its capacity to more than one thousand.
