The reserve occupies 300ha of coastal grassland, riverine forest and subtropical swamp. One of the biggest crocodiles - 5.7 m (16ft) - seen in the area was found dead in the river. Crocodiles still frequent the river along with hippos and monitor lizards ('leguaans').
On dry land, there are zebra, bushpig and buck. Enseleni means 'the place of the badger'. There are two trails through swamp forest - the Nkonkoni and Mvubu - and a 5km self guided trail through the reserve is available at the weekends.
An activities centre is available to schools and other groups. There is no accommodation in the reserve.
The reserve contains bushpig, giraffe, zebra, hippo, crocodile, duiker, wildebeest, waterbuck, nyala and reedbuck.
