Tourism and Accommodation in Natal

The battlefield of Elandslaagte is close to this railway junction. A house reputed to have been built by Voortrekker Karl Landman is located in the town. Fort Mistake was a British signalling post between Ladysmith and Newcastle.

Babanango Valley Lodge (2000ha)

The reserve is blessed with a rich variety of habitats and straddles the transition between lowveld and highveld. This small exclusive resort is hosted by Dr. John Turner who is happy to lead morning and afternoon walks.

He has made an extensive study of the Anglo/Zulu war, several of the battlefields of which are close to the Lodge. Dr. Turner leads guided tours to these battlefields, not only from the 1879 war but also those of King Shaka in the early 19th century. Flights over the battlefields can be arranged.

Valhalla Lodge (2500ha)

Valhalla integrates a working farm with a conservation area in beautiful, tranquil surroundings. There are walking trails and horse riding, Bushman paintings and, adjacent to the farm, a cemetery for the British soldiers who fought and died at Isandlwana and Rorkes Drift. Also close to the farm is Helpmekaar, where the British defeated a Boer force in 1899.

Eland, nyala, impala, kudu, bushbuck, warthog, wildebeest, zebra and others.

There is a large lodge with four bedrooms plus a family suite. The units are fully equipped and can either be self catering or full board. Back to Menu
